THE CITY OF JOY
So how Kolkata became more beautiful?
THE BISWA-BANGLA GATE
Biswa Bangla Gate has been set up by The Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (HIDCO) on the Major Arterial Road at Narkelbagan, Action Area - I of New Town, Kolkata. The gate along with the restaurant is now open for public. The visitors gallery and restaurant is surrounded by glass, which will be part of the wall. From here, one can see a lot of parts of New town and kOLKATA.
It is a type of Welcome gate and is built by HIDCO, under the government of West Bengal. The design was finalised by calling for submission of designs through a public notice in web sites as well as newspaper advertisements. A committee headed by Architect Dulal Mukherjee was formed which evaluated the designs from various architects from around the country.
The design by M/s Vector Designs, a Pune-based architecture firm was recommended by the committee. A work order was soon issued now that the design was accepted by the Board of Directors of HIDCO.
This hanging restaurant is developed as a part of Newtown's beauty project. From the idea of Visitor's Gallery in Paris's EIFFLE TOWER and hanging restaurant in Malaysia, HIDCO has built this gate and the accompanying hanging restaurant.
2. The kolkata big ban
The journey from the airport to the city of Kolkata cannot be called extraordinary by any stretch of imagination. As you drive along the Kazi Nazrul Islam Sarani, popular as VIP Road, the chaotic urban planning makes for a jarring sight. But don't avert your gaze just yet. Wait until you reach the juncture between Lake Town and VIP Road. A surprise awaits - in the shape of "Big Ben".
Like the original Big Ben, the Kolkata clock tower has four giant clocks facing the cardinal directions. Christened "Kolkata Time Zone", it has been built by the local municipal body as a part of the drive to beautify the city. "We decided to build something vertical and hit upon the idea of a clock tower," says Mriganka Bhattacharya, the South Dumdum Municipality chairman

5. Floating market
Over 200 shops on over 100 boats, India and Kolkata’s first Bangkok-inspired floating market opened over the weekend at Patuli. Fruits, vegetables, fish and other produce are sold on the boats by vendors who moved out from the Patuli VIP market. You can even get garments and a haircut here!
The boats are connected by wooden pathways and are divided into sections depending on what they are selling and is 500 meters long and 60 meters wide.
The market is open to all through the day from about 6 am to 9 pm. There have been a couple of issues {measuring and weighing veggies on boats for instance, and then there are hygiene concerns} but the market otherwise seems to be functioning in full force.
