A Hidden Gem of kolkata

Kolkata's very own mini 'CHINA TOWN'

Tiretta Bazaar, is a neighborhood near Lalbazar in Central KolkataIt is usually called "Old China Market". Most of the Hakka Chinese people have moved to Tangra near EM bypass now. The locality was once home to 20,000 ethnic Chinese restaurant nationals, but now the population has dropped to approximately 2,000.
The traditional occupation of the Chinese Indian community in Kolkata had been working in the nearby tanning industry as well as in Chinese restaurants. The area is still noted for the Chinese restaurants where many people flock to taste traditional Chinese and Indian chinese cuisine

Indian or Chinese?

Their roots in the Indian subcontinent are remarkably strong and such are their feelings for the nation. They vote for the Indian government, they work and earn their living here and do not want to return back to their country. At the
same time they rank China on first position and do appreciate China for the progress it is making.

Survival strategies..

If you haven’t been to the Tangra locality it is high time you should visit today for it is not long that they will be gone. One of the most integral part of the Indian Chinese culture is at risk and we need to take immediate action. Chinese still residing in this area are striving hard towards preserving their culture by celebrating The Chinese New year in a grand manner. They even circulate newspapers every morning in order to keep the interest burning in the hearts of common people

Although Tangra is a shabby looking locality with only a handful of restaurants operating, they are still known for the most authentic Chinese food in the city. People often like to visit restaurants like Beijing, Kim Ling Kolkata, Tung Fong, Hakka Village Chinese Restaurant, Big Boss and more. This community has played a very important role
in the life of the Indians for around 250 years now. Be it leather tanneries, beauty parlours, restaurants or shoe manufacturing companies, they have always proved themselves worthwhile. It is high time we take strict measures to preserve this integral cultural heritage of India from fading away forever.
